Reusing other people's junk!
Some days ago, we spent the afternoon in Kensington market learning about reusing and recycling other people's junk! We learned about how you can give things away that you don't need to someone who will use them and that you can use things that someone else might not need anymore. Its way better to do this than to add to the mounds of garbage.
Nicole from the Its Your Life jewellery shop above the Kapisanan Philippine Centre showed us all the ways she used other people's "junk" to furnish and decorate her shop - - - bits of wood to display her necklaces, old baskets for shelves, tables that others left on the street. The kids were also in love with her original jewellery designs.
Next door, Helena from vintage clothing store, Pretty Freedom, showed us how the entire shop was furnished with items found the the street! The kids were surprised because the store did not look like junk at all! We also learned about how the clothing for sale was also previously used.
Around the corner, we visited the Whipper Snapper Gallery's Free Store. People could leave things they didn't need anymore, and pick up things they might. Some of us left with some new fun items, and some of us left with nothing.
We ended the day exploring the market. Cora's Kitchen gives out delicious mini cupcakes to any little kid that visits.

Electric Guitar Lesson w/ Alex Laurence
We had a great music lesson in Alex's basement studio last week. He plays in local Toronto band, The Miles, among a few others. It was interesting to see someone else's music space and he was also pretty good at playing with us too!

Music with Ohbijou
We met up with some of our friends and were lucky to spend our music lesson with half of local Toronto Indie band, Ohbijou. We did vocal exercises with Casey, Heather + James. We heard their recordings and shared our own songs with them. Casey taught us part of a song that she wrote for a children's compilation that is being put together and sold to help the relief in Japan. We ended our lesson with recording a part for the song. We are so excited to be part of this project!

True Green Thumbs
Today, the kids planted herbs with local gardener Kira. They were totally into it. They talked about how to take care of seeds and plants. They made scarecrows to go in their pots. They also talked about how Kira found the pots on the street and took them so that they could reuse them for this project. Their session ended with feeding food scraps to the worms in the compost bin.

Cherry Blossoms + Sharing
We admired the beautiful cherry blossoms in High Park last week. We talked about how in Japan so many trees are covered in these beautiful flowers right now and people gather and drink tea by the trees. Instead of tea, we shared a ceremonial Chinese coconut bun. We sat for 20 seconds in silence to admire the falling petals then passed the bun around, each taking a piece and passing it on to the person next to us. It was brilliant. Nine children, two adults and one bun, silently sharing. Each person thanked the cherry blossoms as they took their share of coconut bun.
Sharing other delicious treats... one slice of cake and five children. One and a half cookies and ten children (with two going around making sure everyone gets their share).
